Emerald is a variety of the mineral species beryl, it belongs to the silicate class (it is a cyclosilicate of beryllium and aluminum), and crystallizes in the hexagonal system.
The color is due to the presence of small quantities of chromium and varies from bright green to green with blue shades. Furthermore, most gems have internal characteristics, called in technical jargon "inclusions", or more improperly "gardens" due to their resemblance to moss.
